April 30, 2009

Wow! We are seeing history being made today. Barrack Obama has announced that Chrysler is filing for Chapter 11 protection (reorganization) under the US Bankruptcy laws. This move breaks every contact Chrysler Corporation has with its Dealers, unions, Suppliers, insurance companies, and health care providers. In our opinion the merger with FIAT is either a waste or a gift depending on your point of view. Fiat has somehow been anointed the savior of Chrysler because of its small car technology, specifically the Fiat 500. Clifton pointed out that the identical car is a Ford Ka that Ford has repeatedly refused to import into the US because its internal studies have shown that it will not sell here in the US. Somehow that fact has evaded the car czar and his fellow beaurocrats that are now running the show. Cerebus (the current owner) has not been mentioned in any of the press releases. Glenn shared with our audience that it’s still safe to buy a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep. The dealers are not going away and the government has guaranteed the warranties on these vehicles. After 50 years of being a Chrysler Dealer in Elgin, Shaumburg, Buffalo Grove, Elmhurst and Santa Fe our heart goes out to the men and women of Chrysler Corp its suppliers and dealers. We wish you the best of luck.

April 23rd, 2009 Show

Great show today with our usual super smart and well spoken callers. People weighted in on “the ten things we could do to jump start the automobile industry” an article in Fast Company Magazine. Carbon taxes, gas taxes, all electric cars, energy policies, cash for clunkers and national health care were all discussed along with your hosts brilliant opinions. Clifton also tried to lesson the politics of the show explaining that Four Corners Car Talk is not a political show it just ends up being that way since the government got involved in the bailout of GM and Chrysler. Now the car business is political too. Paint that heals, electric cars that won’t work in the Four Corners (wherever that is); exporting the carbon footprint from California to New Mexico via electric cars was also brought up. Last but not least Clifton was advised to “keep his day job” by none other the famous Kenny Kendrick after listening to Clifton’s blues/rap ad on the radio. OK OK OK I get it… Stick to my day job.

April 16th 2009 Show

April 16, 2009

Well we fired up the listeners today with our conversation on GM’s possible bankruptcy. Mary, a very passionate and articulate listener expressed that GM should just go broke. There business model did not work and she could not stand the idea that her tax money was going to help them. Her own business failed and no one helped her. Clif and Glenn felt that either way (restructuring or BK) GM would come out the other side of this as a drastically different company that should be able to compete in the modern marketplace. Other items discussed were the red light camera meeting at Farmington city council. Farmington wants to have a public hearing on the matter and will let us know. A listener called in and correctly identified the Chitty Chitty Bang Car as a 1921 Bently re-powered with a 3000 ford engine… Glenn’s college of useless knowledge once again. Also today was the beta version of Clifs newest thoughts on breakthrough  advertising, take a listen .  Thanks for listening and enjoy the day

Clifton and Glen discussed the irony of FIAT buying Chrysler using 2 billion that they got from a failed deal with GM, and another 10 billion from the US government. Why it’s a crazy world with the Obama administration firing the head of GM and essentially taking ownership of the second largest corporation in the world. Clifton made a prediction and will now be put into writing. His prediction is that the city of Farmington will not, at the end of the day, install red light cameras. Economics from either the red light camera supplier or the city will determine that the proposal will not make enough money to survive (as long as the city does not adjust light timing). Segways, PUMAs, pirates and Cliftons joke about why he was concerned when Obama was out of the country… “Who is running GM when Obama is overseas?” Rounded out the show.

The boys expressed amazement that the President of the United States would personally fire the head of one of the largest corporations in America.  Obama just took on the responsibility for the success of GM, why would he do that?  Politically it shows “The President is in Charge”,  but realistically it makes him the person responsible for cramming down debt (into equity), breaking the unions, dumping the entire health care responsibility on the government and possible wiping out the shareholders equity by going into bankruptcy(bringing up the argument that you just saved the company but wiped out the owners,  so why bother).  Arguments have been made that this firing  and  government intervention is the end of capitalism as we know it.  Clifton felt there was no such threat, the government is now the primary lender to GM and as such has more than enough “power” to suggest that “someone must go”. In any event it was depressing so Glenn moved on to some of the things that are more interesting in the car business.  Like the smells your car makes when it is in need of repair. For instance a burnt toast smell indicates and oil leak or overheat condition.  Wow that is exciting! Nuff said.
